O’Brien Icehouse offers the most comprehensive range of ice skating lessons in Melbourne. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned professional, we have a class and program to suit both kids and adults. Regardless if your ambitions are to be an Olympic figure skater, an NHL ice hockey player or to go as fast as Steven Bradbury in speed skating, Skate School is the place to start.

Skate School classes run on Wednesday evenings, Saturday and Sunday mornings. O’Brien Icehouse is a member rink of Ice Skating Australia and teaches the accredited Australian Learn to Skate curriculum, Aussie Skate™. Classes are 30 minutes once a week and cost $24 per week (the full term is payable upfront). The cost includes the 30 minute lesson, skates and helmet. The term length is based on the Victorian Government school dates and varies accordingly. Term lengths are also subjected to the O’Brien Icehouse internal calendar and events.

Which class is suitable for you? All skaters should start at the beginning. If you have previous professional training, you are welcome to book in an assessment by completing this form

  • Tots 1: For children 5 years old and under with no previous professional lessons
  • Basic 1: For children 6 years to 13 years old with no previous professional lessons
  • Adult 1: For 13 years old plus with no previous professional lessons

However, before committing to a whole term of classes, we strongly recommend that you try ice skating. There are two requirements to join Skate School:

  1. You have been skating before
  2. You can hold your own balance on the ice without holding on to anything or anyone

If you do not meet the above criteria, there are a number of options for different ages to get in some skating hours.

Under 8s:

9:00am-10:15am, Sunday (everyday of the school holidays).

A special area for children under 8 years old and their parents to get familiar with the ice. The Under 8s area under the big screen filled with sleds, toys and coach(es) to help get your child skating. It is the perfect place and time for your child to gain the confidence and balance they need to join Skate School.
