With top speeds in competition approaching 50km/h and races over in under forty seconds, speed skating is blink-and-you’ll-miss-it fast.

While the roots of speed skating date all the way to a millennium ago when enterprising Scandinavians added bones to their shoes to make it easier to travel on frozen rivers, it wasn’t until 1592 when a Scotsman designed the first skate with an iron blade.

That Scotsman would be skating proudly (and quickly!) in the clouds if he knew that today there were thousands of speed skating associations around the world, including the Victorian Ice Racing Association, Olympic Southern Flyers and the Docklands Demons, all which proudly call O’Brien Icehouse their home.

In addition to both clubs training here weekly, O’Brien Icehouse runs Learn to Speed Skate programs with coaches from both the Demons and Flyers.

This low-impact game of patience, precision and broomsticks has gained popularity in recent years with now a world-wide audience of over 1.5 million registered players.

The amount of strategy and teamwork that goes into choosing the ideal path and placement of each stone, and the skill of the curler to decide how to achieve this has lead to curling being given the nickname of “chess on ice”.

THEATRE ON ICE

TOI as it’s affectionately known, combines elements of technical skill with the drama and spectacle of theatre, including story telling. TOI is one of the newer disciplines of skating and is gaining popularity throughout the world. TOI has a multitude of age and testing-based levels with teams requiring a minimum of 8 to a maximum of 24 skaters.

TOI provides another fun-filled team-based discipline for skaters to take part in the sport, especially for those who thrive on expressing their artistic side.

TOI has 2 disciplines – Free Skate Program and Choreographic Exercise. The Choreographic Exercise is the more uniform of the two with all skaters having to wear black and interpreting the Theme and Gestures assigned by ISU for that year. The Free Skate Program is only limited by time constraints and imagination with a focus on storytelling, theatricality, and creating a universe for the audience.

The O’Brien Icehouse is currently home to TOI Phoenix – an Open Team with a vast array of skating skill levels and ages ranging from 8 through to the nifty-fifties and beyond. 2022 was a great return to the ice for TOI with TOI Phoenix competing at ANZAS, Crystal Challenge, Gwen Peterson Trophy (Canberra), and Southern Cross Trophy to name a few. There are also several additional local and interstate competitions that offer TOI, along with international competitions in Boston and Paris.

TOI Phoenix welcomes all skaters to come and try our exciting team-based discipline and meet the team. As a guide, the base level choreography would suit skaters at a testing level of Free Skate 1 and above (or the equivalent).
